Why should we try to grow citruses in the domestic environment when they are full of supermarkets? Apart from the fact that we will look forward to our own horticultural arts when we discover the fruits of the cultivated plants, the possibility of year-round consumption of chemically untreated fruit is also advantageous.
Do I need a glasshouse to grow citrus?
Successful citrus cultivation is absolutely necessary. Often, the citrus grows up in the store, and it grows out of us in a few weeks after its purchase. So how do we find the right key to grow citrus, when we do not live in the south of Spain and have no subtropical greenhouse?
Subtropics at home behind the window
At home, we probably will not be able to grow pomelos or big oranges. But if we choose a good plant and we take care of it properly, we will definitely bring our efforts to our fruit. Flower plants are more suitable for small plants, such as citrus reticulata, citrus limon, lime (citrus aurantifolia) or kumquat (fortunatella).
Substrate and cultivation vessel
A suitable substrate is permeable and rich in nutrients. Excellent is a mixture of peat, compost and coarse sand, in a ratio of 1: 1: 0.5. The ideal pH of the substrate is 5 - 6.5. The flower pot should not only be nice to look at, but should especially respect plant needs. For citruses, we chose a higher
flower pot, in the optimal case we get a self-watering pot.
Light and heat
Citrus plants like light, warmth and moisture. In summer, we place it in a very sunny and warm place (22 - 28 ° C) and roasted regularly. In winter, we move the plant to a place where there is still enough light, but also enough cold (around 10˚C).
Tip:
Citrus plants love winter gardens. In
winter gardens the grower will achieve the greatest success. This will also be enhanced by investing in high quality insulating glass and the possibility of controlling heat and humidity in the winter garden.
